River Safe From Sleepy Hollow South Only

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Recreational users of the Hudson River can safely go into the water from Sleepy Hollow on south, the Westchester County Department of Health has advised, but north of Sleepy Hollow the health advisory remains in effect.

Philipse Manor Beach, in Sleepy Hollow, can reopen, but Croton Point Park Beach will remain closed until further notice.

The health department estimates there had been an ongoing sewage discharge of 1.5 million gallons per day of sewage due to the sewer main break reported by Ossining on Thursday. The Village of Ossining repaired the break late afternoon on Friday.

Results from beach water quality samples taken Friday by the county health department were available late Saturday afternoon and showed improved water quality in Sleepy Hollow and south and ongoing unacceptable levels of bacteria in areas north of Sleepy Hollow.

The Health Department will continue to monitor the situation and will update this advisory when possible.
