With Uber and ride-sharing services becoming more prevalent around the country, advocates from “Who’s Driving You?” have issued a warning to Hudson Valley residents to be on alert for phony drivers.

Officials with “Who’s Driving You,” an initiative of the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, warned about the perils of services such as Uber and Lyft, which can attract fake drivers looking to take advantage of suspect passengers.

According to the “Who’s Driving You” website, the organization seeks to educate potential riders of “the methods by which Uber and Lyft undercut for-hire vehicle safety - via inadequate insurance, background checks and more.”

“Because Uber cars lack obvious and hard-to-fake external markings, impostors pose a serious threat to consumers. Any New York City passenger could have climbed into one of these fake Ubers,” Dave Sutton, a spokesperson for “Who’s Driving You?” said in a statement. “Uber impostors have kidnapped, sexually assaulted, attacked and robbed unsuspecting passengers.”
