Possible Health Risk Leads To Macadamia Nuts Recall

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Aurora Products has issued a voluntary recall of several types of macadamia nuts sold in stores in Westchester County and throughout the nation due to a possible risk of salmonella contamination, according to a press release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The following possibly harmful 8-ounce tubs of macadamia nuts were sold at various retailers in 15 states, including the entire tristate area, according to the press release.

  • Belmont Market, UPC number 6-55852-00083-0;
  • Citarella, UPC number 1-50209-12050-1;
  • Ernest Klein, UPC number 6-55852-00083-0;
  • Gourmet Garage, UPC number 7-90845-05025-3;
  • Harvest Co-Op Market, UPC number 6-55852-00083-0;
  • Le District, UPC number 6-55852-00083-0;
  • Lees Market, UPC number 6-55852-00083-0;
  • Palmers Market, UPC number 6-55852-00083-0;
  • Walter Stewart Market, UPC number 6-55852-00083-0;

The “best used by date” on the potentially contaminated containers of nuts is between December 2015 and January 2016.

Anyone with such tubs of nuts is asked to either destroy them or return them to the place of purchase.

Salmonella is a potentially deadly disease, especially among young people, elderly people, or people with compromised immune systems, according to the FDA.

In rare cases, salmonella bacteria can cause dramatic health complications including infected aneurysms and heart inflammation.
