Pope Francis Starts Historic Two-Day Visit To New York City

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Pope Francis has touched down in New York City, arriving at JFK International Airport at approximately 5:20 p.m. Thursday for a two-day visit to the city during a historic trip to the United States.

The pope made the trip from Washington, D.C., in an American Airlines chartered plane which displayed flags of the United States and Vatican.

The 78-year-old pope, making his first-ever visit to the U.S., was greeted by children from local Catholic schools and Cardinal Timothy Dolan after touching down. He is scheduled to take a helicopter to the Wall Street area before boarding the "Pope mobile" in a motorcade to St. Patrick’s Cathedral that is scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m.

Pope Francis will make will numerous stops in the city Friday, including a multi-religious service at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at 11:30 a.m., a papal motorcade through Central Park at 5 p.m. and a mass at Madison Square Garden at 6 p.m.

The pope will leave for Philadelphia Saturday morning.
