ARMONK, N.Y. - A kindergarten class at Coman Hill Elementary School participated in the Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program Tuesday, listening to a book read by a parent before acting out a theme from the book.
PARP is an annual program that features a new book each year. This year's book, selected by Conan Hill principal Carol Fisher from suggestions by the PARP committee, was "One," by Kathryn Otoshi, which uses colors to communicate a message of respect.
Heather Hecht, a parent of a kindergartener, read the book, which shows dissenting colors coming together to communicate a clear message. "Sometimes it just takes one person to get up and help others," she said.
Lisa Palmer, the kindergarten teacher, said the PARP program is valuable because "having parents read books to children sends a bigger picture."
She also said having the kids act out scenes from the book "allows kids to participate, do role playing and interact with other personalities."
Alison Bernstein, a parent who is the local co-chair of PARP, a national program, said "It gets kids excited about reading."
All Coman Hill kindergarten through second grade classes will engage in PARP sessions and all will be read the same book.
