North Castle Remembers 9/11 With Ceremony

ARMONK, N.Y. – A decade after the attacks of Sept.11, 2001, North Castle residents, police officers and volunteers flocked the Armonk Fire House Sunday to honor those who perished and celebrate the heroes involved in the emergency response efforts that followed.

“That day, what you saw happen was a bunch of volunteers that never questioned what they had to do, they just did their job,” said Mike Giaccio, who was Armonk’s fire chief at the time. “That, above all, was the most amazing thing anyone can see.”

Giaccio, along with other volunteer firefighters from Armonk, Banksville and North White Plains, hopped on their fire trucks and headed to the World Trade Center after the attacks to help in the emergency effort.

“We were there for two-and-a-half weeks straight and everybody did what they had to do,” Giaccio said. “It was one of the most amazing times of my life watching everyone pull together the way they did and I’m glad that people still remember what happened that day.”

North Castle Supervisor Bill Weaver was happy with the large turnout of residents at the ceremony, which he described as “a great thing.”

“It just shows the people in this community won’t forget and I think it’s a great honor for them to come here and be part of this presentation,” Weaver said. “It shows the type of community we have and I’m very appreciative of all the people who came here.”

The ceremony was originally scheduled to be held at Wampus Brook Park but due to flooding it had to be moved to the fire house.

“I really wanted to have it in the park but we were so afraid about the weather, plus it was flooded so we felt it was safer to have it here,” said Rebecca Kittredge, a council member.

Kittredge was also pleased with the way the ceremony turned out and the respect that was heralded upon the town’s firefighters and EMS.

“A lot of people in town don’t realize these are all volunteers and they’re great guys and girls,” Kittredge said. “Thank goodness we have so many good volunteers.”
