North Castle Encouraged to Recycle and Reuse

ARMONK, N.Y. – Recycle and re-use will be the theme next weekend when North Castle's Recycling Committee conducts its sixth Zero Waste Day in three years outside Town Hall Saturday Oct. 15 between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents of North Castle and neighboring towns are urged by April Paresi and Deborah Cerar, committee co-chairs, to bring scrap-metal, e-waste, paper and oils for recycling. Lightly used bicycles, furniture, linens and pet supplies are encouraged to be brought for re-use.

“It’s just nice to see in our town how many people really care about doing the right thing,” Paresi said of the event's past success. “One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure, so-to-speak, so it makes you feel good to live in a community that cares about that and to work in a committee of people that want to make those things happen.”

The committee was formed in 2008 and in the spring of 2009 it held the first Zero Waste day, which has taken place twice a year ever since.

A list of items accepted at Zero Waste Day can be found on the recycling committee's web-page NorthCastleNY.com.

In the past, e-waste such as computers and televisions have been the most popular items recycled but this year, Paresi and Cerar are hoping for more lightly-used furniture, which will in turn be handed over to an organization called Furniture Share House and then off to families in need.

“They’re giving furniture to people who’ve lost their homes in fires floods, etc. so they’re looking for dressers couches tables and chairs,” Paresi said. “They didn’t get a lot of that in our last event and got a lot of accessories instead, which are nice but they won’t really help someone furnish an apartment.”

The recycling committee is hoping to further North Castle’s knowledge of recycling with a web-page called “recyclopedia,” which will be completed fairly soon according to Paresi and Cerar.

The Page will inform residents on how to dispose of or recycle all items properly.

Volunteers are a huge reason the Zero Waste Day events have been a success, to Paresi and Cerar said. They’re always looking for passionate people to either join the committee or help out when possible.
