WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. Hurricane Irene's approach will force a massive shutdown of the region's transportation network.
The hurricane's heaviest winds and rain are expected to start hitting Westchester County early Sunday morning, but the transportation shutdown will begin long before then.
Metro-North Railroad will shut down all operations at noon on Saturday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's website says. You can find a timetable for the last trains running Saturday morning here. Grand Central Terminal and all Metro-North stations will be closed while service is halted.
Traffic on the Tappan Zee Bridge, the Bear Mountain Bridge and all other major bridges in the area will be halted if winds exceed 60 miles an hour. Tolls and fares will be eliminated on some trains and bridges, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Email alerts are available on the Thruway Authority's website.
Flights in and out of Westchester County Airport will be cancelled as of 6 p.m. Saturday and are not expected to resume until 3 p.m. Monday, the airport's website says.
The Bronx River Parkway will be closed today at 6 p.m. from the split with the Sprain Brook Parkway to Kensico Dam, the Westchester County government website says.
