Prince Rogers Nelson was found in his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota on Thursday morning, TMZ reported.
The singer had been experiencing health issues that forced his plane to make an emergency landing on April 15. Prince then appeared at a concert the next day to show his fans he was doing okay, TMZ said.
The Associated Press confirmed Prince's death in a Tweet just after 1 p.m.
Prince rose to stardom in 1982 with his album "1999." He went on to win seven Grammys and sell more than 100 million records.
