Money Snatched From White Plains Mall at Gunpoint

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A man "conned his way" into the Coin Mint at the White Plains Mall Tuesday before the store opened, flashed a silver handgun while asking for money and left with about $9,700 cash, Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said the store was not open at 10 a.m. Tuesday when a male in his 40's "talked about business" to weasel his way into the locked store. Once inside, Chong said the armed man demanded that the sole employee in the store open the safe.

The employee didn't know the combination to the safe. Instead, the man grabbed a stack of money laying in the back office and ran off, according to police.

The suspect is described as a black male about 5 feet, 7 inches tall in his 40's, wearing a black coat and black knit hat.
