The house is located on Nichols Road and is near Route 121 and the border of North Salem. Residents in the area were evacuated and the roads were closed to traffic, the sheriff's office said, adding that phone calls were made advising residents to stay in their homes.
The sheriff's office stated that the incident began around 12:15 p.m. The man allegedly called someone, expressed suicidal thoughts to that person and threatened to violently react to police if they came to his home.
The person involved in the phone call notified the sheriff's department, which responded to the man's house on Nichols Road.
The sheriff's office states that gunshots were heard from the house upon arrival.
Assisting at the scene were members of the Putnam County Emergency Response Team, which is a joint group comprised of sheriff's deputies, Carmel police and Kent police; and troopers from the New York State Police.
