Main Street Shops Extremely Busy During Outage

ARMONK, N.Y. - Main Street has been extra popular all week during the power outage, with people crowding the shops for food and a place to hang-out that is not their powerless homes.

Armonk Country Kitchen has been as busy as ever since Irene hit and employee David Fernandez jokingly said he feels like he’s lost his vacation.

“This is normally the slowest week of the year with people on vacation but it’s actually seemed like it’s been as busy as it would be if it was a holiday or something,” Fernandez said.

Though most of the town remained dark through the week, many businesses on Main Street retained power. The ones that lost power were mostly restored by Monday.

“We thankfully got our power back Monday, it’s the phones that have been the issue,” Amore Pizzeria owner Joe Mazzotta said. “They work sometimes and don’t others.”

Mazzotta said Amore has been swamped with people who can’t cook hot meals at home. He was also pleasantly surprised about how the Armonk community reacted to the blackout.

“We’ve been extraordinarily busy because people don’t have power and this is a place for them to eat and get light,” Mazzotta said. “The community came together and I think the situation has kind of humbled everybody because without the lights, electricity, computers and games for the kids."

|Mazzotta, whose own house is still without power, said he has enjoyed the week at home because it brought his family closer together.

“People have had no choice but to sit together and I think that’s a good thing,” Mazzotta said. “I still don’t have power at my house and I like it because my kids can’t watch the TV or go on the computer. We sit by candlelight, eating and talking, the way it used to be.”
