The center of the Northeast group of Lyme disease spread west and north, into eastern and central Pennsylvania, according to the report.

Seventeen states have high-risk counties, including Connecticut, where Lyme disease was first identified in 1975, according to Drug Discovery and Development.

Risk of coming into contact with infected ticks is affected by human behavior, geographic changes that favor tick populations or the spread of infected ticks by birds and deer to other areas, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
