PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. Over 15,000 girls around Westchester County will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts Monday by participating in various events and service projects.
Jean Havens, a spokesperson for Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson in Pleasantville, said that individual troops in each town will celebrate in their own way on Monday, with a large Centennial Gala set to take place on Thursday in Tarrytown.
Girl Scouts in Pelham will be holding a father-daughter dance, Hastings-on-Hudson will be holding a celebration in the James Harmon Community Center where they will recite the Girl Scouts Promise and artwork from Ossining Girl Scouts will be on display in the Ossining Public Library.
Girl Scouts, which was originally founded on March 12, 1912, holds deep historical ties with the village of Pleasantville, according to the group. Founder Juliette Gordon Lows goddaughter Anne Hyde Choate was a Pleasantville resident and created the first ever Westchester County Girl Scout troop in 1915, which was based out of the Bedford Road School.
The Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson will hold their Centennial Gala on March 15 at 6 p.m. at the Double Tree Hilton in Tarrytown. Local women will be honored for their outstanding excellence such as Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison), actress Vanessa Williams and business entrepreneur Elizabeth Bracken-Thompson, among others.
The Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson serves over 32,000 girls in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties.
