This El Niño has been classified as the most powerful ever.
El Niños are created when steady, westward-blowing trade winds in the Pacific weaken, or reverse direction, causing an intense warming of the upper ocean in the central and eastern Pacific, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory said.
Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict the El Niño-induced weather patterns to bring several months of relatively cool and wet weather across the southern United States, and warmer and dry conditions in the northern United States, added officials with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
