VALHALLA, N.Y. Children of Kensico Elementary School in Valhalla were treated to a day of Native American history as taught by educational organization, Journeys Into American Indian Territory.
Its nice to have a job you love, said Instructor Maddie Cheers.
Cheers, who created the educational organization with her husband years ago, spent Tuesday demonstrating various Indian technologies to the students.
Connecting the kids to nature is my favorite part of the presentation, Cheers said. The other thing is watching them and how excited they are to be a part of this.
Students learned about how Indians created and used atlatls, bows and arrows, lacrosse sticks, deer skin clothing, and canoes. A miniature long house was displayed as well.
"A lot of times teachers will say you guys are great and we are good at what we do but were also doing something that theyre [the kids] really interested in and its a great topic to do with kids," Cheers said.
Students were also treated to an instructional lesson on how Native Americans created clay pottery. Presenter Ferdinand Uaian Bruno taught about the different types of pottery and how they were used and then instructed the children with simple steps how to create a small pot, which they all were able to partake in.
The clay pottery lesson was held in a science classroom and the Indian tech presentation, which consisted of many artifacts and consumed more space, was held on the stage near the gymnasium.
