Irene Swamps 2-1-1, Help Line Seeks Volunteers

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The United Way's 2-1-1 helpline has fielded over 3,500 calls since Saturday while answering thousands of questions about Irene and tropical storm recovery efforts.

Although 2-1-1 call center staff have manned the lines throughout the storm, 2-1-1 call center now seeks assistance to help meet the massive call volume. Majority of calls relate to road closures, dry ice, disabled assistance, and federal emergency recovery funds.

The local United Way needs volunteers to work four-hour shifts around the clock at its White Plains headquarters until the call volume begins to drop.

The call center hopes to schedule volunteer shifts beginning Monday evening at 5 p.m. through Saturday. Volunteers should plan on showing up half an hour before their shift starts for training.

If interested in working one of the four-hour shifts listed below please contact Shannon Cobb at (914) 997-6700 ext. 720:

- 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.

- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
