Intel Names Local Science Contest Semifinalists

Several local students were named on Jan. 12 as semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search. The fourteen Westchester residents were picked along with 286 other high school seniors throughout the country in this prestigious competition.

The 70-year-old talent search is billed as “the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition,” and this year, 1,744 scholars submitted independent research projects, which were later whittled down to 300 students.

The nationwide talent search is designed for the best science students, who are in the final year of high school, to compete for $1.25 million in awards. Each semifinalist is rewarded with $1,000 from the Intel Foundation and their high school also receives $1,000. The prestigious event, in which seven former finalists have won the Nobel Prize, is run by the Society for Science and the Public while Intel has been a sponsor for the past 13 years.

Research projects such as “Electrically Induced Dehydration of Ammonia Borane” and “Investigating the Efficiency of Growth and Incorporation of Small Intestinal Mucosal Organoids,” were completed by semifinalists, Vikrampal Bhandari-Young of Edgemont High School and Katharine Costantini of Pelham High School respectively.

The 300 semifinalists will find out on Jan. 26 if they are picked as one of the 40 finalists. Those students chosen will receive a free trip to Washington, D.C. from March 10-15. They will contend for awards, provided by the Intel Foundation, that total more than $630,000. The 40 finalists will each receive at least $7,500.

The winners will be chosen based on demanding judging sessions and then announced at a formal award ceremony at the National Building Museum on March 15. The first place winner will receive $100,000 while awards totaling $350,000 will be given to the remaining top 10.

The other twelve students are Sammi Cannold, Jesse Honig, and Aurora Xu of Byram Hills High School, Davis Wertheimer of Horace Greeley High School, Brian McGovern of Eastchester High School, Amelia Clements, Daniel Olin, Emily Prentiss, and Frances Russell of Ossining High School, Apoorva Talanki of Edgemont High School, Gibran Mian of Scarsdale High School, and Benjamin Van Doren of White Plains High School.
