BUCHANAN, N.Y. Control room operators shut down Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant 2 this morning, citing the need to repair a malfunctioning water supply pump. The pump is one of four that supplies cooling water to the plants reactor. They are located inside of the containment building.
Plant operators said Unit 2 has been operating for 230 consecutive days prior to todays shut down. Indian Point Power Plant 3 has been operating for 278 consecutive days since returning to service from a refueling shutdown.
The two reactors together produce approximately 2,000 megawatts of power for Westchester and the New York City area, according to plant officials. That's about 30 percent of the energy needed for the service area.
