Hurricane Irene Could Impact Tappan Zee Bridge

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Meteorologists are predicting high winds as a result of Hurricane Irene's visit to Westchester County. Those winds could affect traffic over the Tappan Zee Bridge this weekend.

Bridge officials will be monitoring winds throughout the weekend, the state Thruway Authority said.

Spokesperson R.W. Groneman said if there were sustained winds of 30 mph, the Thruway Authority, which oversees the bridge,  would reduce speeds to 45 mph.

If sustained winds hit 60 mph, the agency would begin to close the bridge to certain types of cars: trucks with empty trailors, busses and motorcycles. If winds proved too high, then the bridge would be closed to all traffic.

Groneman said the agency would work with neighboring transportation providers to alert them of any closures. Drivers can check on highway advisories by turning their radios to 530-AM or listening online here. The Thruway Authority will also put alerts on its highway signs. Email alerts are also available on the Thruway's website.
