Hudson River Sewage Leak Has Stopped

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The sewage leak from the Harlem Waste Water Treatment Plant into the Hudson River has stopped, according to the New York Department of Environmental Protection.

The leak was stopped as of 9:30 p.m. Friday night, according to a press release issued by the department.

The department and contractors “continue to repair equipment, assess damage, and perform cleanup activities.”

The Westchester County Department of Health is still advising residents to avoid direct contact with the Hudson River south of Ossining. The county cleared the river north of Ossining on Friday.

Health officials have advised against kayaking, swimming and windsurfing south of Ossining. They have not restricted boating and urge residents who fish to practice “catch and release” south of Ossining.

The advisories come days after a four-alarm fire broke out in the engine room of the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant in New York City around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Sewage began leaking into the Hudson River around 5:15 p.m. the same day.
