Green Acres Garden Club Holds Flower Exhibit

ARMONK, N.Y. – Co-presidents of the Green Acres Garden Club Susan Bohm and Carolyn Salon hosted an exhibit of flower arrangements and horticulture at Hergenhan Recreation Center in Armonk Saturday.

The flower arrangements that were displayed were all created by members of the club. There were six categories and, for the first time in garden club history, the public was able to vote for their favorites.

“It’s so much fun. We’re all friends and we’ve made friends at the garden club,” Salon said. “The cooperation and good spirit of the women in the garden club is just lovely.”

The garden club has also recently begun working with the senior group that occupies Hergenhan Center twice a week.

“They were mostly sitting in the same room the whole time and we felt they should go outside more so we made some raised beds for them and helped them plant tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and some flowers,” Bohm said. “They’re outside much more and I think it’s a good thing we have going.”

Green Acres has planted many of Armonk’s large trees over the years, including some around Town Hall and also the crab-apple trees at the library, but the largest project the club ever had was helping create Wampus Brook Park.

The club is now in its 72nd year and Salon and Bohm say they’re always looking for new members to join.

“We have so much fun together and it’s a great club,” Bohm said. “If you’re new to town and join a club like this you suddenly know a bunch of nice people.”

The funding for everything the club plants around town comes from the plant sale the club holds the day before Mother's Day each year.
