It was an especially happy new year for Martha and Raul Hernandez of New Rochelle, the proud parents of the first baby born in 2012 at Sound Shore Medical Center.
At 4:16 a.m., Hernandez gave birth to her third child, Grace, a 7 pound 8 ounces baby girl, with curly black hair. Their two sons, Abiel, 10, and Samuel, 8, were at her bedside along with Raul. Martha and Rual Hernandez will be married 12 years in July.
The New Years birth was a surprise because Martha Hernandez was scheduled to give birth by cesarean section on Jan. 10, but she experienced pains Saturday night and was rushed to the hospital.
"It's shocking, it's the Lord's way," she said.
Raul Hernandez was also surprised at the birth date. "It's a new baby and a new year," he said.
Martha Hernandez was grateful to give birth to her third baby and first daughter. "I'm so happy to have a girl," she said. "And it's a miracle because I wasn't supposed to have another baby because I have a hip problem. It took eight years and I'm so happy today."
