The recommendation marks the first time screening for maternal mental illness has been recommended by the government. It comes on the heels of new evidence that suggests maternal mental illness is more prevalent than previously thought, The New York Times reported.

The mental screenings were just one of several updates to the depression screening guidelines made by the panel appointed by the Department of Health and Human Services, The Times said.
