"Glee" Classes Begin at St. Stephen's Church

ARMONK, N.Y. – A handful of young Armonk singers showed up for “Glee” classes by Theater Arts Workshop Friday afternoon at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Marie Captain of Theater Arts Workshop said teaching classes that are based on the hit television series should appeal to a wide audience.

“I think Glee will touch everybody,” Captain said. “It’ll touch all the audience, from the little kids, to teenagers, to adults, there’s something for everyone. The music is so good because, not only do they have songs from today, but from the 60’s and 70’s and also from classic jazz standards, so it runs the gamut.”

Classes run through January, which will culminate with a final production at Whippoorwill Hall, where the young students get the chance to show off what they’ve learned in a hometown environment.

“I like the intimacy of Whippoorwill Hall and the fact that it’s not huge or overwhelming, especially for the younger kids, and for the older kids, it accommodates them beautifully too,” Captain said. “When the parents see their kids at the show and can meet them backstage, that’s great to see. After that they get to flock into town and get a bite to eat with relatives that come to watch them.”

Each student is required to pay a tuition to participate, which is invested in the final show and adds to the overall quality of the final performance, Captain said.

“Their tuition goes towards teachers’ pay and the rest goes toward the production of the show,” Captain said.

The Theater Arts Workshop hires professional choreographers, lighting and set design crews.

This fall, the Theater Arts Workshop will host a costume party CD signing for Halloween, which Captain hopes gains community interest.
