Giants Fans Race to Modell's for Super Bowl Xlvi

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – New York Giants fans of all ages raced to the nearest Modell's on Saturday to outfit themselves in “Big Blue” gear for the Super Bowl XLVI showdown against the New England Patriots.

Alfred Eskandar of Greenwich, Conn., brought his young son, Orson, to the Port Chester Modell’s to get him ready for tomorrow.

“The boys are finally understanding what football is, so they’re excited,” Eskandar said of Orson and his other son, Julian, who is 7-years old.

Eskandar was searching for Giants items that would fit his sons while also keeping an eye on the wandering Orson, who is a little over 3-years old.

“I’m looking to get him a couple of hats, a shirt, and just get them into the spirit while they watch the game.”

Susana Savage of Larchmont was looking for a Giants jersey or t-shirt because she did not have any Giant clothes to wear for the big game.

“I didn’t own anything that said Giants, so now you want to be a part of the team,” said Savage. “A part of the occasion, you get dressed up for it.”

Ricky Forbes, general manager of the store, said that “sales have been good.”

“Things have been great,” he said of the store during the Giants playoff run. “Fans are showing up. They’re having fun.”

Forbes said that the Victor Cruz salsa t-shirts are hot items in addition to the popular jerseys.

Jared Rich of Greenwich is hoping that his superstitious ways bring some luck to the Giants.

“Last time they were in the Super Bowl, I bought myself a Plaxico Burress t-shirt and I kind of felt since they won that I was going to keep the tradition,” said Rich.

He was having a difficult time finding a jersey because most of the smalls, mediums, and larges were sold out.

“Now I’m just trying to get a t-shirt of one of their wide receivers, but they all look like they are quite large now,” he said. “Let’s hope I find one and then they get the same outcome.”

The Modell's in Greenburgh was also inundated with Giant fans looking for a last minute hat, t-shirt, or jersey.

Dino Mountroukas was buying Giants gear for himself and for the rest of his family as well.

“A Cruz jersey for me and now I gotta see what the three girls want and probably my wife too,” said the Irvington resident. “I told them I’d get them a couple of shirts for the game. So we can get into the spirit of things.”

Peggy Panker, a lifelong Giants fan, was with her 7-year old twins, Connor and Ian. The mother of four was trying to buy different Giants t-shirts for all of her children.

“It looks like they run out and the pull more stuff out,” the Hawthrone resident said of the quick sale of jerseys.

They had three jerseys of key components of the New York offense in Eli Manning, Hakeem Nicks, and Victor Cruz. However, Panker was still deciding what to buy for her fourth child.

Tariq Kataka, a worker at Modell’s, said that the jerseys have been selling fast.

He added that Modell's has been “closing late and opening up early. We had a lot of customers coming in starting from Wednesday. All the small sizes, medium sizes, and large sizes were taken off.”

Kataka said that the kids wanted to wear the Giants jerseys and t-shirts to school.

Both Modell's stores are ready for the onslaught of exuberant Giants fans if they are able to beat the Patriots for the second time in four years in the Super Bowl.

“If the Giants do win, we’re going to open immediately right after the game,” said Forbes.
