Fresh Air volunteers are looking for Westchester residents to host a Fresh Air child this summer. Each summer, more than 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada, according to a press release.

“There is still time to host,” said Judith Brisson, chair of the Western Westchester Fresh Air Fund. “It is the most rewarding experience to see Westchester’s everyday experiences through someone else’s eyes for the first time.”

Brisson and her family will invite their Fresh Air child, Rohan, back to Westchester this summer.

“We went to Tea Town Lake Reservation last summer, and Rohan met a giant frog for the first time,” Brisson said.

All it takes is "an open heart and an open home" to a host a child, representatives said.

“We doubled our host family base since last summer, however the number of host families is still small and we’d love to see it continue to increase for the summer,” said volunteer Martha Mintzer. “If you have any time to give, help give the gift of summer to a New York City child.”

First-time Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and Fresh Air hosts range from young families to grandparents.

“It is the most rewarding opportunity; I just wish every family could experience the incredible impact these children have on our lives,” said Mintzer.

The Fresh Air Fund is an independent, not-for-profit agency, that has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877.
