Former Yonkers Judge Wants Seat on State Supreme Court Bench

This is the second in a series of three profiles of candidates for judge for the New York State Supreme Court, 9th Judicial District. A profile of the third candidate, Robert DiBella, will appear Friday.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Edward Borrelli, a former Yonkers city judge, is one of three candidates for two seats on the New York State Supreme Court, 9th Judicial District, covering Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess and Putnam counties.

A registered Republican, Borrelli is listed on the Republican and conservative lines on the Nov. 8 ballot. He is running against Attorney Paul Marx and Acting Supreme Court Judge Robert DiBella.

Borrelli earned a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College in 1973 and obtained his juris doctorate in 1976 from New York Law School. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1977 and in the District of Columbia in 1979.

Currently a guardianship referee with the Supreme Court, 9th Judicial District, and a judicial hearing officer/special counsel for the New York State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics, he was a city court judge in Yonkers in 2000 and 2003. Previously, he was assistant director for education and training with the New York State Office of Court Administration from 1977 to 2000.

In a statement posted on his website, Borrelli said, “Serving in judicial office is an honor, a privilege and a public trust that is exceeded by no other form of public service. My more than 33 years experience as a judicial educator and as a member of and special counsel to the New York State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics advising, guiding and training New York State Judges statewide has inspired me to seek election as a Family Court Judge.”

He cited his experience as a Yonkers city judge and his work at the state Supreme Court presiding over trials addressing family issues as his top qualifications for the position. “My highest priority will be the ethical and impartial performance of the adjudicative duties of the office,” he said.

Borrelli’s candidacy has been endorsed by the Yonkers Police Benevolent Association, the Westchester/Putnam Central Labor Body, AFL-CIO and other organizations, according to his website.

The Supreme Court of the State of New York is the Court of general state wide jurisdiction, in which most civil cases are tried.
