FEMA to Westchester: There's Still Time to File A Claim

WESTCHESTER,NY--FEMA officials say residents in Westchester and the Hudson Valley, who lost food and property due to Hurricane Irene, have until the end of the month to file a claim for reimbursement.

Gilbert Knier, FEMA Public Information Field Specialist for Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange counties, said homeowners, renters or business owners who suffered loss from the storm may be eligible for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, but must register with FEMA before October 31.

"All residents have to do is register, get a nine digit number, and then visit any mobile disaster assistance site to get the ball rolling," said Knier.  Disaster assistance sites are currently planned for Poughkeepsie, Kingston, New Hampton and New Windsor. He says a long-term site will eventually be set up on Long Island.

Utility company Consolidated Edison has said it will not reimburse residents for lost food from the recent hurricane. "Customers are more than welcome to file a claim," said Con Ed spokesman Alfonso Quiroz, "But we typically do not offer reimbursement if it's an Act of God." He went on to add, "If it were Con Ed's fault, such as an outage, transmission line problems or a transformer fire, that would be a different story."

Residents are urged to call the FEMA helpline and register at 800-621-3362. They can also register online at www.disasterassistance.gov.
