FEMA Opens Recovery Center in County Center

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened a disaster recovery center in the Westchester County Center's Little Theater Wednesday to help residents and businesses deal with the aftermath of Irene.

The recovery center will officially open at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and continue to serve Westchester from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily until further notice. Parking fees at the County Center lot will be waived to accommodate those seeking help from FEMA.

County Executive Robert Astorino has encouraged residents and businesses to document storm damage with photographs and receipts for repairs.

"We are working very aggressively to get help to our residents and businesses as quickly as possible," Astorino said in a press release. "The first step is for those impacted to register with FEMA, either in person, by telephone, or online. I know many people prefer meeting with someone in person, which is why this Disaster Recovery Center has been set up."

FEMA requests that applicants register by calling 1-800-621-3362 or going online before visiting the recovery center.

The Small Business Administration will have representatives at the disaster recovery center to help explain low-interest loan packages to residents, non-profits, and businesses of any size. If approved, residents and organizations have six months to decide whether accepting the loan is a good route to replacing or fixing damaged property.
