Finding and documenting a young great white shark about 3 miles off the coast of Margate has been "life-changing" for the family as their discovery earned them a place in great white shark conservation history, says CBS New York.
Experts say there are thousands of the sharks off the East Coast, CBS New York reports. Considered vulnerable because of declining numbers, great white sharks, the inspiration behind the book and movie "Jaws," make their habitat in any major ocean and can often be found near the coasts, according to CBS New York.
The Schreiber family of South Jersey reported the sighting, complete with photos and videos, to the Massachusetts Shark Research Program. Then they were able to name the young shark Carlos, CBS New York says.
