European Art Class Starts at North Castle Library

ARMONK, N.Y. - About 15 North Castle Library patrons enjoyed the first lecture in "European Art: From the 17th to the End of the 19th Century" Tuesday evening.

Valerie Franco, a professor of literature and cinema studies at Pace University and a former actress and cinematographer, introduced the class, which will meet on Tuesday evenings for 16 weeks. She showed slides as she discussed the art.

The class will focus on Neo-Classicism and Romanticism, with sculptor Antonio Canova and painter Ford Madox Brown among the artists to be covered.

Franco hopes the class will enable students to broaden their perspectives on art and the world. "If you can appreciate art you can appreciate everything that happens around it," she said. "It's not just one picture on the wall, it's everything around you."

Claire Schwartz, an Armonk resident originally from Belgium who attended the class, said Franco "is very interesting. I'm an art lover with no formal education who's very dedicated so I'm looking forward to the class."

"I want to learn something about the art of that period," said Terry Schoepf, from Armonk. "I attended Ms. Franco's previous programs and she's very exuberant and upbeat about the subject."
