YONKERS, New York The folks at Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway are betting the house that a cure can be found for Juvenile Diabetes. And they're hoping thousands come out this Sunday to support the annual Walk to Cure Diabetes, a worldwide event to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
The cause has a personal connection for Empire City General Manager Bob Galterio. His daughter, Cara, was diagnosed with the disease 10 years ago. The Bedford resident immediately was compelled to take action and so "Cure for Cara" was born. Sunday, Galterio plans to be out on the Yonkers Raceway grounds with more than 2,500 others trying to reach the goal of raising $690,000 for research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications.
"It's great to be partnering with JDRF and working together on such an important goal curing a disease that kills one American every three minutes," says Galterio. "The recent statistics are staggering and reveal that health care expenditures surrounding diabetes cost our nation more than $174 billion. These are the reasons we are committed to raising money for the cutting-edge research that JDRF funds. By working together, we can make a difference."
This year the Westchester County Chapter of JDRF will honor the Stagg family of White Plains and its walk team, Team Amanda. Team Amanda has been participating in the Walk to Cure Diabetes by raising more than $264,000.
JDRF Walks are held in more than 200 cities worldwide. Nearly 500,000 people nationally walked last year and raised $90 million to cure diabetes. The Westchester walk begins at 10 a.m., with registration at the racetrack entrance opening an hour earlier.
