Con-Ed Gives Away Free Dry Ice in Armonk

ARMONK, N.Y.- Con Ed has restored some of North Castle’s power since Tropical Storm Irene but Edward and Theresa Lobermann are still in the dark and have no way to keep their food cold other than dry ice.

The couple made their way to Business Park Drive in Armonk Wednesday morning to scoop-up some free dry ice, which Con-Ed offered throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We have five neighbors on my street who all raced out and got generators,” Theresa Lobermann said. “They’re all younger than we are so we’re the old pioneers that haven’t done it yet, but I can’t go through this again one more time, so we might be out looking for a generator too.”

The couple said they go through about 60-pounds of dry ice per day trying to keep the food cold and they’ve had to travel to Mamaroneck to pay more than $12 for 10 pounds. Con-Ed, the couple said, never told them anything about its free ice giveaway in Armonk.

“We found an ice place in Mamaroneck and we’ve been buying it from them,” Edward Lobermann said. “We called Con-Ed today and they didn’t tell us about this. They said there is no ice.”

Theresa said she and her husband were on their way to buy ice for the day when she decided to call the Police Department to see if there was anything closer.

“They said there’s ice here [Armonk] now," she said.

Con-Ed spokesman Chris Olert said giving out free dry ice to the North Castle community is, “the right thing to do.”

“It’s not required for us to do it by any rules or regulations, it’s just the right thing to do,” Olert said.

According to Olert, about 15 percent of North Castle’s originally powerless residents have been fully restored and there’s still about 2,800 residents to go.

“Some power may come back sooner than others, it depends on what feed or circuit they’re on,” Olert said. “In the whole county we have to restore 13,000 residents still.”

Olert said Con-Ed probably will not be back on Business Park Drive in Armonk Thursday with more dry-ice handouts.

“A lot of power will be restored tonight [Wednesday],” Olert said. “We’re almost to the point where it’s an individual home or business now.”
