Baseball Card Show Held in White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Three days of baseball nostalgia wrapped up on Sunday at the Westchester County Center with visits by New York baseball stars Goose Gossage and Gary Sheffield.

The show, sponsored by JP's Sports  & Rock Solid Promotion featured more than 300 tables and 150 vendors who showed historic cards and also sold game balls, bats, pennants and signed photos. The show was attended by a few thousand fans.

Roger Bradshaw, a dealer from Long Island, offered historic Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth cards. He said he shows the cards at more than 80 shows a year in the tri-state area.

Michael Allocca, a fan from Astoria, said he looks for vintage cards, Brooklyn Dodgers cards and hall of famer cards, including Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks.

He approved of an old Mickey Mantle card that depicted the slugger swinging a bat but rejected a card with a simple head shot.

"If the picture appeals to me I'll buy it, but not just because it's worth a lot," he said.

Baseball cards can be worth up to $100,00, according to Brian Coppola, the owner of JP's Sports & Rock Solid Promotion, although there were cards selling at the show Sunday for as little as 10 cents.

There were also companies authenticating cards, with customers filling out detailed forms before handing over their cards.

John Galante, a collector from Harrison, said, authenticating the cards "increases their value. You can double or triple the value."
