ARMONK, N.Y. -- The Wampus school third grade celebrated Chinese New Year on Monday with a festive event that included a parade inside the school and a smorgasbord of Chinese food supplied by parents.
"The event celebrated the culture of China, everything we learned about the New Year and the food they eat," said Donna Scorrano, a third grade teacher. "We compared the Chinese culture with our own lives and looked at the geography."
The event also highlighted Chinese related work the students did, including a Great Wall of China mural that is posted on a wall across from student comments on Emperor Ch'in, whose dynasty built the Great Wall. The students also made Chinese lanterns that were designed with Chinese calligraphy.
All third graders at Wampus, which includes nine classes, participated in the program and some of their parents were on hand to celebrate.
Ilese Nenner, whose son Griffen is a Wampus third grade student, said the event was valuable because it allowed students "to learn about another culture and broaden their horizons. They had fun making dragons and trying Chinese food."
