Armonk Square Groundbreaking Celebrated Saturday

ARMONK, N.Y. – After waiting 30 years Armonk residents can finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing ground has been broken on the Armonk Square project, which will bring a DeCicco grocery store, residential spaces, and shops to the currently vacant lot off Main Street.

"It will really change the character of downtown, which I think is going to be great," North Castle Town Supervisor William Weaver said. "It's going to be a total revitalization."

Despite the addition of stores in close proximity to Main Street, most believe existing shops will flourish with the completion of the project. "You can park in one place, go to the post office, get something to eat, do your grocery shopping, everything you need will be in one place," Town Councilman Becky Kittredge said. "To me it's the best and it's going to keep Main Street alive."

Town Councilman Diane Roth knows project had to be accomplished and she attributes its approval to the cohesive work of the entire town board and planning board. She also hopes the existing Main Street shops will be able to withstand the new competition.

"We do have to remember there are going to be winners and losers as far as stores on Main Street," Roth said. "We hope the stores can all withstand the competition and do the best they can." DeCicco Markets is a family owned business with eight stores currently in and around Westchester.

"I've been to DeCicco Markets and they're a great operator and it's really the kind of retailer you want located here and the store will be a great addition to the downtown," Town Councilman John Cronin said. "The area right now is basically a hole in the middle of the town and the project has been put on hold in one form or another for 30 years but it's great that it's finally fallen into shape like this."
