Armonk SAT Pro Shares His Secrets

ARMONK, N.Y. - He aced his SAT exams, graduated high school and finished his freshman year in college. Instead of taking the summer off to relax, Armonk's Sam Hougie said he wanted to share his success with others by helping younger students study for the SATs.

"When I was a junior, I remember struggling to prepare," Hougie said. "After practicing, I realized there are ways to train your brain for the test and improve your score more than you thought. I want to share that."

Hougie will teach this summer with test prep company Revolution Prep as a head instructor for their Ivy Insiders classroom courses and tutoring programs. The courses begin in July.

While attending Byram Hills High School, he received a 2380 and 2270 in two SAT sittings to combine for a perfect score on the exam.

While studying for the exam, Hougie said he approached it with the wrong assumptions.

"With a lot of practice, this isn’t just a subjective test you can't figure out," he said.

He said there are patterns that create predictability within the test. With enough experience, Hougie said students can know what to expect every time.

"I basically went through the whole College Board SAT book and did about 10 exams," he said. By the end, his reading score went up about 100 points because he said he learned what to expect.

"Initially, I thought I'd never improve," he said. "That’s not the case. You just have to understand the test."

Hougie graduated from Byram Hills High School in 2010 and recently completed his freshman year at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania studying finance and management with a minor in French. He also worked as a tutor at college and said his experience has an educator will give him a greater chance to help other students during his summer courses.
