Armonk: Did You Know?

ARMONK, N.Y. – Did you know that many of the place names around North Castle came from Indian origins?

Most local place names, according to a piece by town historian Doris Finch Watson on NorthCastleNY.com, were derived from the Siwanoys Indians of the Wappinger Confederacy. That includes Wampus, which was a chief name. The Siwanoys called Byram River “Armonck,” which eventually became the name for the hamlet, Armonk.
