Albanian Heritage Honored in Valhalla

Albanian American culture was recognized last weekend when Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli proclaimed June 5, 2011 "Albanian American Heritage Day" in the 89th assembly district.

“Albanian American Heritage Day affirms the culture, identity and self-esteem of two great nations,” Castelli said. “It also celebrates a rich heritage and illuminates Albanian history and tradition, as well as the spirit of an indomitable people."

An annual tradition honoring Albanian traditions and customs took place Sunday at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. The festivities were presented by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, and the Mother Teresa Center at Our Lady of Shkodra Church.

According to Castelli, the state of New York has one of the largest populations of Albanian citizens in the country.

“One of the most important duties we as legislators must perform is recognizing the cultural heritage of the ethnic groups which comprise and contribute to the richness and diversity of the community,” Castelli said. “The Albanian American Heritage Day festival offers us all an opportunity to applaud and commemorate events with our Albanian American friends and neighbors.”
