Air Quality Alert Issued for New York Metro Area

WESTCHESTER—An air quality alert has been issued for the New York Metropolitan area from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. tonight, including Westchester County and Long Island. The alert was issued by the Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York Department of Health.

Young children, those who do vigorous outdoor activity and those with respiratory conditions (such as asthma) should limit outdoor activities. Staying inside can generally reduce an individual’s level of exposure to the elevated levels of ozone.

Ozone should not be confused with the protective layer of the earth’s atmosphere, but is a ground-level byproduct of car emissions and “out-of-state” emissions, according to the DEC. The department also has a toll-free Air Quality Hotline to keep New Yorkers informed about air quality alerts. The number is 1-800-535-1345.
