Low gas prices and mild weather are credited for the reason behind the 3 percent increase in traffic on the 570-mile highway, says the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The increase in traffic brought in an additional $12.5 million in New York Thruway tolls, reports the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The thruway also received state funding in March of $1.3 billion, most earmarked for Tappan Zee construction but was also used to keep tolls down, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.
