Iona College may have fallen to the University of North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament opening road, but New Rochelle has made it into the Elite Eight round of a competition naming the “Strongest Town in America.”

After taking down Sheboygan, Wisconsin to earn their spot in the second round, New Rochelle is now matched up against Portsmouth, N.H. for a seat in the Final Four of the competition, which is being hosted by the national nonprofit Strong Towns.

According to officials, the “Strongest Town contest is a month-long, bracket-based competition designed to spotlight communities from around the world that are building enduring financial resilience at the local level and actively embodying the Strong Towns approach to economic growth and development.”

In the second round, contestants have been asked to cut back on the text describing why their town should win, and instead requested five photos, with a caption for each, explaining how it illustrates the strength of the city.

For their photos, city officials submitted a shot of downtown New Rochelle, the Lincoln Park Community Garden, a picture of local residents dancing at the New Rochelle Street Fair on Main Street and sunbathers at Glen Island Park. The last photo shows someone using VR to highlight that the city is “on the cutting edge of technology.

Portsmouth or New Rochelle will face the winner of Erwin, Tennessee and Safety Harbor, Florida in the Final Four with a berth in the finals on the line.

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said, "It’s an honor simply to be selected for the Round of 16, but let’s not stop there. Please vote for New Rochelle, and then spread the word (The voting closes on Thursday, March 21st).”

Those interested in seeing the photos and voting for New Rochelle can do so here.
