Doug Sherman is an ace on the court at the Armonk Tennis Club and Armonk Indoor Sports Center. As the tennis director for nearly four years, he works with players of all ages and abilities to make tennis a fulfilling part of their lives.
Originally from Chappaqua, Sherman said he started playing tennis at the age of 8 at the Birchwood Swim and Tennis Club. It was there that he fell in love with the sport, mostly because of the influence of coach Hank Quinn. Quinn was a well-known tennis figure, coaching world-class players beginning in the 1940s.
Sherman called Quinn an inspiring individual, saying the two made a connection that changed his life. I knew tennis would be a part of my life forever, he said.
After earning several rankings as a junior player, Sherman competed in college at James Madison University in Virginia. During high school and college, he was a full-time tennis instructor during the summer months. Following his graduation from JMU, Sherman began to teach the sport year-round, and he came to Armonk in 2008.
Sherman said the tennis facilities at Armonk Indoor Sports Center and Armonk Tennis Club are first-rate. Armonk Indoor offers 4 championship DecoTurf courts, which provide the same playing surface as the US Open, while Armonk Tennis offers four indoor Har-Tru courts and 10 outdoor courts, 8 Har-Tru and two red clay. Sherman said these facilities provide year-round programming for all levels of juniors and adults.
Sherman said the staff at Armonk Tennis and Armonk Indoor is also uniquely qualified to handle the tennis needs of all clients. We could have 4 year olds playing in our pee-wee programs, while on the neighboring courts, you can often see some of our long-dedicated members, now in their 80s and 90s," Sherman explained. "The activity on our courts reflects that tennis is truly a lifelong sport."
