Parks Board Member Leads Corporate Volunteerism

By convincing customers to pay their electric bills online instead of by mail, Sandy Miller and her team at Con Edison have donated $21,000 to the Friends of Westchester County Parks over the past three years.

“We look for certain areas where we can sustain communities, and the parks bring a quality of life that is a big draw to Westchester,” said Con Edison’s Director of Public Affairs.

Miller, who is an Armonk resident, said that every time someone makes the switch to e-billing, $1 is sent to the non-profit organization. That contribution is then used to either fund new projects or plant trees around the county.

She has also been on the board of trustees for the Friends of Westchester County Parks for the past three years. She said she joined not only because she felt it was a worthy organization, but also because she felt a personal connection with its mission.

“My friends and I would spend every summer at Rye's Playland Park and the beach at Glen Island in New Rochelle,” she said of her childhood.

She plans to further contribute to the Friends by creating environmentally-conscious volunteer programs for her employees at Con Edison.

“We want to make Westchester a better place,” she said. “Con Edison has always been community minded."

Next on the agenda, Con Edison recently announced it will partner with the Friends of Westchester County Parks by co-sponsoring Bicycle Sundays on the Bronx River Parkway this spring through a $20,000 donation.
