Northern Westchester Hospital Moves Toward The Future

MOUNT KISCO, NY – Co-chairs of Northern Westchester Hospital’s annual gala Kim and Andrew Handler said this year’s event was inspired by all things “Mad Men.” It will invoke the feel of the early 60s and provide guests with a glimpse at the Hospital’s future.

Scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Saw Mill Club in Mount Kisco, the gala will support the Hospital’s efforts to build new operating rooms and a post anesthesia care unit.

Handler said the event, entitled “The Sixties” is going to highlight how far the Hospital has come since the 1960s and where it is going. Catering by Abigail Kirsh will include a 1960s style menu and a milk shake bar.

Handler said the Starlight Orchestra featuring Valerie Romanoff will be performing for a great party that is “sure to get people dancing.”

This year’s event will also honor Marian Hamilton, founder of the Ken Hamilton Caregivers Center, and Dr. Roger Riechers.

Handler added that the gala will also showcase a state-of-the-art piece of surgical equipment – the da Vinci® Robot, of which the Hospital has two. Guests can try their hand at some minimally invasive surgery and get a true understanding of the benefits of a new surgical suite, which she said is “what the evening is really about.”

Handler said the renovation is scheduled to start early next year and will take about 18 months to complete.

“Guests will have a great night of friends, food, dancing, and coming together to support a great hospital,” she said.

Handler, an interior decorator and her husband Andrew, a commodities trader, have lived in Bedford Corners with their three children aged 7, 4 and 2 for five years. Handler said she and Andrew became involved with the Hospital three years ago on the suggestion of her friend, Jodie Boies. She recalls Boies saying the Hospital is a resource in the community from which everyone benefits.

The Handlers discovered just how true that was over the last year and a half when Andrew was hospitalized and Kim was required to have two stomach surgeries. She added that her son also required the Hospital’s emergency room on a few occasions.

“Each experience we have had has been a positive one,” she said. “We have had great care, amazing doctors and it is our pleasure to be able to help the Hospital which has helped us.”

In addition to their involvement with NWH, the Handlers are also very active at their children’s school, Rippowam Cisqua, and the Boys and Girls Club.

Andrew is in the process of opening a CrossFit gym in Mount Kisco early next month and is speaking to the Boys and Girls Club about getting kids to use the facility when it opens, she said.

“With the Boys and Girls Club, as with the hospital, we love incorporating our love of health and fitness into something that benefits our community,” she said. “It's nice to feel like we are a part of something.”
