Katonah Jeweler Brings Old World Skill to 2011

Zadik Agcaian, a jeweler in Katonah, said technology has its place, but he still likes to work with the jewelry tools he brought with him from Turkey decades ago.

Robin McCormick, the owner of Katonah’s Robin McCormick Fine Jewelry and Design said, “Technology is still our friend, but there are a lot of things that computers and machines cannot do.” That is why she has had Agcaian on site since the store opened more than five years ago. ”It has to have that touch and eye from a human and that is what he brings to us--the artist.”

Agcaian began learning his craft in Istanbul in 1959 and brought it to America in 1972. Customers can still find him wearing large magnifying glasses, with a blue flame and a collection of tools that help him manipulate both the gold and the stones into one of a kind creations. Agcaian is known for taking old pieces of jewelry and recreating them to save a part of family history.

He and his wife raised their family in Queens while he owned a store in the city. Agcaian began his artistry in Westchester about a decade ago. He joined McCormick when she opened her shop in 2005.

“I had heard that he was an exceptional jeweler and he has proven himself to be so,” said McCormick. “He takes pride in his work. The pieces that we create, he really puts his all into.”

McCormick, a resident of Goldens Bridge, pointed to a necklace she was wearing with three individually-set diamonds that had originally been a pair of stud earrings and pin.

“This is a lost art,” said McCormick. “There are not a lot of people that still do this.”
