Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot makes melodic magic at Peekskill's Paramount Center in a one night only performance on Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. Best known for his 1974 hit, "If You Could Read My Mind," the song reached number five on the American charts. Over the years, his music has been recorded by performers of many stripes -- including Elivis Presley AND Olivia Newton-John AND Sarah McLachlan!
Lightfoot first appeared on the music industry's radar in the '60s, as a composer of memorable songs others recorded, including "For Lovin' Me," "Early Morning Rain" (Peter, Paul and Mary) and "Ribbon of Darkness" (Marty Robbins.) Straddling several genres, including folk, rock, pop and country, he seems to feel comfortable in all, which could be because he's been performing since childhood. After 50 years in the business, Lightfoot's record sales now exceed ten million.
About his earliest performances, Lightfoot told the Canandian Broadcasting Corporation, "I came into demand as a wedding singer of eleven or twelve. Then, in high school, I was singing with a dance band." He wrote his first song, he said, at 18 and was signed as a songwriter by BMI two years later. Now, at 71, and in spite of his half century spent on the road, Gordon Lightfoot says he has no desire to slow down -- a lucky break for fans.
