If youve ever heard any of the following questions: Whats your favorite pizza topping? Who is your favorite Disney prince? and, Can you make any funny sounds with your mouth? You may be one of the lucky few who have been chosen to sing in the Villanova Supernovas. The answers to those questions do not dictate whether or you get into Villanovas oldest co-ed a capella group (although, if you answer, Beast from Beauty and the Beast to the second question, it could help ) but the willingness to consider the silly choices is what defines a new member.
In college, everyone should be lucky enough to have that group of people they can rely on through everything, who can make them smile when they are down and who are there for some of the most memorable times throughout four years. This past weekend, I fully realized how lucky I am to have a group of friends like that in my life, and that group is the Supernovas.
I joined the group during the second half of my sophomore slump, and quickly fell in love with their easygoing and positive style. They were supportive, fun and sounded greatI thought I had found everything I needed in a group. Over time the group developed into something much greater than a bunch of singers; they became my second family. When I got back from a semester abroad, I threw myself into helping the group more than I had involved myself in anything in the 20 years before. Little did I know, the coolest thing was yet to come.
In the beginning of November, we received an email asking our rates and availability for private gigs. We replied in a very professional manner, stating we would need to hear more details about the event, as well as a date and time, before we could start talking prices. (This was mainly to stall so that we could Google the usual rate for a college a capella group to charge ) When Google was no help, we ended up meeting with the sender of the email, a nice gentleman named Steve, and he told us his proposal. Literally. Steve was hiring us to help him make his girlfriend his fiancé.
Cover your ears and then imagine the squeals from the feminine half of the group when we told them about this gig. After he sat in on a rehearsal, Steve hired us to flash-mob his girlfriend at the Philadelphia Art Museum. We spent over eight hours preparing to serenade her with her favorite song while he took to his knee and proposed. After hours of rehearsal, location scouting, choreographing and practicing on unsuspecting young ladies in Villanova dining halls during finals week, we were ready for the big day. We drove into Philadelphia like a team preparing for the biggest game of their lives.
December 17, 2011 was a day that changed the lives of this young couple, but also an entire a capella group, for that was the day we witnessed true love firsthand. I can now graduate from college having experienced love between members of a couple as well as love among members of an a capella group. I am happy to announce that I continue to feel that love every time I look around when I sing with the Supernovas.
