WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Westchester youth will descend on White Plains Saturday to showcase their intellectual prowess at the 29th annual NAACP Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Awards Breakfast.
The Crowne Plaza Hotel will offer complimentary parking for those who come out to support high schoolers competing in the Olympics. Proceeds from the breakfast will help send regional winners of the ACT-SO competition to the national competition in Houston this July. ACT-SO, an enrichment program for high schoolers of African descent who exhibit artistic or scholastic talents, concludes its annual program with a national competition with science, humanities, entrepreneurship and performing and visual arts components.
The 8:30 a.m. breakfast will bestow three Westchester youth leaders with community service awards. Heather Miller, the director of the Thomas H. Slater Center in White Plains, Lillian Reynolds, a social worker in Mount Vernon and the executive director of Grace Baptist Church's CDC Freedom Schools, and Kenneth Theobalds, vice president of government and regulatory affairs at Entergy, will be recognized. Vinnie Bagwell, a Yonkers sculptor and writer, will give the keynote speech.
